Kathmandu\/20 July – Writing is one of the core skills of a language, which is also a productive skill in the sense that the students are supposed to produce something in a written form. Developing a writing skill in an academic discourse is necessary for students and primarily education aims to do so (Khazraji, 2019). Writing competence is mandatory for students because without having this competence they cannot sustain and achieve the goals as set by the government. Moreover, writing does not mean a way of joining characters for forming higher units; the units produced should be contextually meaningful. Writing is also a form of communication, so it should communicate the message to the readers as intended by the writer. It fails if it does not convey the message to the readers as expected by the writer. Therefore, it should be well-structured and organized to express what it is expected to. Furthermore, any student needs to learn how to develop a first draft, organize ideas, regulate writing behaviour, review the draft, edit the revised draft and produce a final version in order make your piece of writing well-structured. Similarly, the students need to consider the audience and the purpose of their writing which guides them throughout their writing process. In the field of academic writing, there are a number of forms of writing but my intention is to focus on essay writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Essay writing is an academic activity in which one has to develop an essay on a topic. It is an essential skill for students who are involved in language related courses. In both school and college levels, students are asked to write an essay considering its structure and elements. Generally, school and college level essays are written including three parts such as introduction, body and conclusion. In the introduction section, the students have to establish the context for their writing. Similarly, they present the background information about the topic and also present the thesis statement in the same section. The thesis statement is the main and controlling idea of the essay which should be debatable and thought evoking. In the body part, they present the specific details to justify and clarify the thesis. The thesis can be broken into pieces and these pieces can be developed as the topic sentence. Each paragraph should contain one topic sentence and that topic should be elaborated and justified within the same paragraph. Students can use relevant and suitable supporting details to justify the topic or idea. Finally, the conclusion section includes the re-statement of the thesis statement. Students need to conclude the essay without introducing a new idea in this section. When students write a five-paragraph essay, they need to present the introduction of the essay in the first paragraph, subsequent three paragraphs are of the body and final one is for the conclusion. In this paper, I want to clarify about three types of essays such as a descriptive essay, a narrative essay and an argumentative essay with their brief introduction and sample examples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Descriptive essay<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n A descriptive essay describes the topic including either subjective or objective description. When you read out a descriptive essay, you can easily visualize the thing or topic being described there. It is a picture in words that supports the reader see, hear, taste, and smell or feel something that the writer has described. The reader can get a clear picture of the topic when it is composed with an effective description.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Look at the following descriptive essay in which you will see the background information along with the thesis in the first paragraph. The thesis is presented at the end of the introduction section as- it (Gokuleshwar) is popular for its natural, structural and cultural beauties. Then, the thesis has been broken into three topic sentences in order to clarify it. The three topic sentences given in the essay sequentially describe the natural, structural and cultural aspects of Gokuleshwar. Each topic is described forming the separate paragraphs within the body part. Finally, the fifth paragraph concludes the essay. Now, read out the given descriptive essay for identifying the components discussed above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Beautiful Gokuleshwar<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n There are many places with distinct features. Some of them have scenic beauty while others have historical significance or architectural values. Lying in the northern part of the Darchula district, Gokuleshwar is one of the small beautiful hilly valleys on the lap of nature. It lies in Shailyashikhar Municipality of the Darchula district of the far-western province. It is located on the banks of a Chhaulani river and surrounded by small hills on all sides sharing the border with the Baitadi district. It is popular for its natural, structural and cultural beauties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n The scenic beauty with the tranquillity prevailing in this place has an unbeatable charm. The place is rich in diverse flora and also has man friendly climate. The greenery of the place is pleasing and far more suitable for living. In addition, the natural beauty of the place makes the people of it burden-free and pleased when they look and feel its beauty. Small hills with diverse plants and small plains with seasonal crops make the place more appealing. The climate of the place is man-friendly in all seasons. It is neither too hot nor too cold. So, most people prefer to live in this place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n The place has a valley-like structure because it includes small hills and plains, making it more appealing and beautiful. The Mahakali highway passes through it. The highway connects it to the provincial state of Farwestern province. It is a junction point of many villages in the Darchula and Baitadi districts such as Jharkada, Boharigaun, Rithachaupata, Ratamata, Gwani, Nayal, Chausera, Dadiya, Betalthala, Okhalbata, Dewal, Nagtad, Ganjari, Deujhadi, Sera, etc. to name a few of many. People of these villages come to it for various reasons such as business, higher education, health facilities, and job opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Some of the major attractions of Gokuleshwar are the Betaleshwar temple with enriching ancient culture and myths, the Mahadeva temple, the domestic airport (under construction), and most importantly the fair celebrated on the day of lord Shiva. The fair is celebrated for two weeks having people from India and the neighbouring districts such as Baitadi, Dadeldhura, Bajhan, Achham and Doti come to observe and buy agricultural goods, woollen and wooden products, herbal products and natural herbs, and religious materials. The hotels and lodges remain packed at this festival time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Gokuleshwar is a place of choice for many people because of its beauty and man-friendly atmosphere. People love to live here for their personal, professional and all round development. It connects many people and villages to its significance in various dimensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Narrative essay<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n A narrative essay is one of the forms of essay in which a narration tells a story by presenting events usually in order and logical sequence. The main purpose of this essay is to recount events or create a particular mood or impression. When you want to write a narrative essay, you need to generate some ideas on a topic and among them form the thesis which encompasses all other ideas or points. If you look at the following narrative essay, you will find the thesis and then the thesis has been broken into the topic sentences and each paragraph of the body is clarifying the thesis including one topic each. This sample may create a kind of sentimental feeling in the mind of readers about the character \u2018Ganesh\u2019. Now, read out the essay and also identify the thesis, topic sentences, sequence and other elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n A Story of my Villager \u2018Ganesh\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Different people do have their own stories about life and survival. Man has to struggle for his existence and survival between his birth and death. The struggle is an instrument which makes us fit in the world. It is true in the case of the family of Ganesh. Ganesh was born to working-class parents who work whole days for their survival. He has four siblings in his family. He is the first child of his parents. His father is a mason and his mother works as a milk seller and also takes care of her cattle and children. Nobody knows what his life will be and what will happen to him, the struggle leads Ganesh to lose his life in a foreign land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n In spite of their poverty, they sent him to a nearby school for his primary education. After completing his primary education, his parents sent him to secondary school which was five kilometres far from his village. He used to go to school on foot. His parents struggled day and night for their family\u2019s survival and their children\u2019s education. After his secondary education, he went to Delhi with his village mates thinking that his parents could not pay for his higher education because he was not only a single child of his parents; there are four others after him. In Delhi, he did not get a job for more than four months because he did not have any skills required in the hotel. Then, one of his village friends requested his boss say the family background of Ganesh which melted the heart of the boss and he permitted him to work as a dishwasher man. He (Ganesh) accepted his job as a dishwasher because getting a job was very compulsory for him. He worked as a dishwasher thinking about the struggle of his parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n The struggle he made thinking of his family situation made him mature and responsible at an early age. After a half year working in the hotel, he came back home taking one month’s leave. When he reached home, his parents wept silently because they sent their teenage boy to a new place for working. He brought new clothes for his parents and his siblings which gave his parents a joyful weep. His parents asked him about his work, his working situation, and the behaviour of his boss and manager. His replies made his parents silent and put them in an inner weeping. He met all his relatives and villagers on his leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n After spending a month in the village, he went to Delhi for continuing his work. After a week, his parents got bad news about their son who was killed in a road accident. When he was coming back to his room from his work, he was hit by a bike while crossing the road. The death of Ganesh put his family into darkness. His family members and relatives took his death as they lost a pillar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Life is not always the same. The accident took all the dreams of Ganesh and his family within a few minutes. Ganesh might have a number of dreams which were lost in a few minutes. So, he lost his life for his survival and support for his family. Losing a family member is not easy for anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Argumentative essay<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n An argumentative essay presents an argument and a counter-argument within the same essay on a controversial topic. It aims at convincing the reader with the claim of the writer. It is highly persuasive and logical in nature. The writer supports his claim with the help of relevant specific details. He needs to present a counter-argument to the thesis and refute it critically to make his idea stronger. It is also argued that the writer does not only including the points in favour of his claim but also present the points that refute his claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n If you look at the following argumentative essay, you will find the thesis at the end of the first paragraph and two subsequent body paragraphs present specific details in support of the thesis and the fourth paragraph presents a refutation to the thesis and the final paragraph concludes the whole essay. Now, read out the following essay and observe the components mentioned above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n School is Bad for Children<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n School is a formal institution where children go for getting diverse knowledge and information on certain subjects. The schooling system has a long history though the system has been getting modifications in different periods of history. Different schooling systems have been in practice since the inception of the system. Schools are just converting the naturalness of the students into readymade or artificial learning because schools are destroying the students\u2019 natural capacities and qualities without linking learning to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Schools are destroying the naturalness of the students by providing readymade and prepared content on prescribed subjects. The expectations with which the students come to school cannot be fulfilled by the schools because they only impose the determined things on the students without considering the students’ prerequisite experiences and expectations. Schools are just imposing refined theoretical input in the name of education. The inner qualities of students such as activeness, curiosity and readiness are converted into passiveness, laziness and dependence after starting their schooling. Schools are producing the same sort of products based on their so-called prescribed curriculum. School teachers only teach theoretical knowledge and information to the students disrespecting the practicality of the contents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n Schools’ separate life from learning because schools only teach for the sake of teaching or formal education. Schools are putting theoretical stuff on the students keeping them inside the four walls without linking the contents to their practical life. Life-related skills are not taught at schools. Schools are only encouraging students to be prepared for the three-hour examination by developing a competitive sense in them which could not help them in their practical life. Students are taken as a blank sheet of paper on which teachers are supposed to write as they intend. Students are not motivated for their learning and educate themselves which will frustrate them to go to school for learning. Teachers are also not respecting individual differences and child psychology for making the learning for their future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, some scholars are optimistic in the sense that schools are better places because such places are motivating students for learning and expanding their horizons by providing content in diverse domains. Only a few schools are in the frame of traditional teaching and learning but most of the schools are adapting new or innovative systems of teaching and learning which help students to convert their theoretical knowledge into practice. Some schools are motivating students for different vocational pieces of training as core curricular activities. These days the concerned authorities are working out for improving the education system and educative practices of the nation in particular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Schools are killing the natural curiosity and eagerness of students making a vast gap between life and learning. So, many students and parents are not satisfied enough with the schools and education system.
